Avoid raising tensions

President Kibaki on Thursday spoke against ethnic groupings, urging Kenyans to shun tribalism and to remain united.
He should have done so much earlier.
Though he did not elaborate, the timing of his off-the-cuff remarks was quite telling, considering that Kenyans are becoming quite alarmed at the revival of erstwhile moribund outfits such as Gema and Kamatusa.
In fact, it is the feeling of many that the President, as the custodian of the Constitution, should have immediately nipped in the bud the activities of tribal organisations, which threaten to unravel the fragile peace, cohesion and trust between communities.
One of the major aims of the National Accord signed in 2008 after the post-election violence was to heal the nation.
This has not happened yet.
Self-declared leaders of ethnic voting blocs have been holding meetings, ostensibly to pressure the International Criminal Court to postpone the trial of two suspects facing serious charges at The Hague until after the elections.
While we are not concerned with whether the two have a right to run for the presidency, we are apprehensive that the meetings are merely raising tensions among the rest of Kenyans.
