There was drama yesterday after a disabled shoe shiner in Kirigiti town in Kiambu county was confronted by a woman grocery seller for failing to pay for groceries he had taken on credit as other men watched helplessly. It took the intervention of women onlookers to rescue of the helpless man, who had been cornered by the woman. The incident demonstrated the strength of the women in the area where cases of male battering have been reported.
The matter has drawn the attention of Maendeleo ya Wanaume, which has threatened to mobilise men to reclaim their dignity and respect as heads of the family. According to the organisation, more than 460,000 cases of men battering were reported in Central Kenya and 300,000 in Nairobi last year. On Thursday, Internal Security assistant minister Orwa Ojode told parliamentthat alcohol abuse and the inability of men to satisfy their spouses sexually are the major causes of domestic violence.
