Shitanda, Jirongo trade accusations

ACCUSED: Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo
New Ford Kenya party leader Soita Shitanda yesterday accused URP presidential ticket aspirant Cyrus Jirongo of plotting to destroy Saboti MP Eugene Wamalwa's political future. The accusation follows reports of a meeting Jirongo and Wamalwa held in a Kampala hotel recently to discuss Luhya unity and the community's stake in national politics in the forthcoming general election.
The meeting has drawn mixed reactions with claims that Wamalwa, the New Ford Kenya presidential ticket hopeful is shopping for a new party after allegedly being abandoned by Shitanda and Ikolomani MP Boni Khalwale. Shitanda and Khalwale have said they will back DPM Musalia Mudavadi if wrestles the ODM presidential ticket from Prime Minister Raila Odinga.  "Jirongo is trying to destroy that young man's political future. He wants to use him to fight Mudavadi. We hear he has asked him to join him in URP, but we know Wamalwa is New Ford Kenya's presidential candidate and that has not changed. Jirongo is causing confusion for his own selfish interests," Shitanda said.
Speaking to the Star on telephone, the Housing minister said Mudavadi has neither talked to them about his presidential ambitions nor sought their support. "We are now working to comply with the requirements of the Political Parties Act and will present Wamalwa as the party's a presidential candidate at the forthcoming election and we do not want this confusion by Jirongo, " he added.
Contacted for comment, Jirongo said the Kampala meeting was to discuss the elusive Luhya unity. "Wamalwa  and I are looking at the bigger picture and working hard to accomplish the elusive Luhya unity," he said. Jirongo said it was Shitanda and Khalwale, who have abandoned Wamalwa by declaring support for an ODM candidate. Efforts to get comment from Wamalwa failed.
