Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi has demanded that the ODM constitution be amended. The deputy party leader said the amendment would pave the way for healthy and fair competition within the party hierarchy. (READ: PM welcomes Mudavadi’s challenge).

He pointed out that a clause which makes the party leader the automatic candidate as being defective in promoting democracy.
Legislators allied to PM Raila Odinga led by Lands minister James Orengo have indicated that the clause makes the Prime Minister the unchallenged flagbearer.
“Democracy is not just a name. We must ask ourselves if we are making the party accessible to all members in the current format,” Mr Mudavadi said.
He said the party should amend its constitution to accommodate all members and in line with the country’s Constitution.
“We campaigned for a new constitution for the country, so I don’t see the reason why we should fear doing it within our party,” he added.
“If we want ODM to get into State House, then the constitution of the party must be changed to allow healthy competition,” he said.
Mr Mudavadi also dismissed claims that he was planning to quit ODM.
“Who is this making these plans for me? I am already here today talking to the party’s delegates. There are talks within the party and very soon we will be making a decision on who will be our presidential candidate,” he told journalists after attending a church service in Nanyuki town in Laikipia County.
