Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Prince of Wales have agreed to forge a partnership on environmental conservation that will begin with the restoration of Lake Naivasha then replicated in other parts of the country.
At a dinner Thursday evening at Prince Charles' residence at Clarence House in London, the PM and the Prince agreed to set a conservation record on Lake Naivasha, which will serve a model for similar efforts across the world.
The two leaders agreed that they would use the experiences from Lake Naivasha to address the equally degraded Lake Victoria Gulf in future.
During the dinner hosted by the Prince and attended by a number of British businesses, the PM called on UK private sector to join the partnership to restore Lake Naivasha and turn the flower industry in Kenya into a bigger, cleaner and more sustainable business.
He said the Government of Kenya is keen to ensure that efforts to conserve the environment also created better livelihoods for local communities.
Mr Odinga said the flower industry in Kenya distributed 30,000 rose flowers in London during the recent royal wedding as an indication of the sector's strong ties with the people of Britain.
Saying efforts to restore Lake Naivasha cannot be isolated from other environmental activities, the PM called on the Prince to help focus attention and secure support for initiatives to conserve Kenya's water towers.
He said deforestation upstream is partially responsible for the declining water volumes in Lake Naivasha as it made rivers dry up.
The PM said the government remains committed to conserving all the country's water towers and appealed for support.
Mr Odinga was accompanied at the dinner by PS ministry of environment Mr Mohammed Ali, PS PM office Dr Mohammed Isahakia and officials from the Kenya Flower Council.
