Panel named to vet 2012 poll managers

President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Tuesday rushed to beat the deadline of Kenyans submitting their nominess for the panel that will head-hunt members of a fresh commission to supervise elections.

They submitted two names each, late in the evening to Parliament as the 14 days per the Act guiding of recruitment of members of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
Last evening President Kibaki nominated retired diplomat Mwanyengela Ngali and Prof Marion Wanjiku Mutugi to the seven-member panel.
“We have received names from all nominating bodies as required by the law,” said Mr Patrick Gichohi, the Clerk of the National Assembly.
Prime Minister Odinga nominated former Committee experts director Ekuru Aukot and Ms Rosa Akinyi Buyu, who was a member of the Andrew Ligale boundary review commission.
The PM had early nominated former Butere MP Amukowa Anangwe to the panel but his name was replaced by that of Dr Aukot.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) nominated High Court judge Isaac Lenaola and magistrate Emily Ominde to the panel.
The Association of Professional Societies of East African picked Dr William Okello Ogara and Ms Sophie Njeri Moturi while the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission advisory board sent Ms Irene Cheptoo Keino and Mr Charles Kariuki Wambugu.
The nominees must be vetted and approved by Parliament.
Parliament is expected to pick one or reject all nominees by the JSC, anti-graft board and group of professionals.
If rejected, the nominating bodies will be forced to pick new persons.
