Share/Save/Bookmark Will Prince William and his wife spend their honey moon in Kenya? Despite reports that the couple had decided to postpone their honeymoon for a while, speculation was growing that they would spend some of their two week honeymoon in Kenya.
The speculation grew when a special charter plane landed at the JKIA yesterday morning and the occupants were quickly whisked away to board several vehicles parked at the airport apron which then drove at high speed to another section of the airport where another smaller plane was waiting.
Reports were that the occupants were the advance team for the royal couple who were expected to fly to Kiwayuu island in Lamu which has previously been a hideout for the Prince and such notables like musician Mick Jagger.
Sources at the British High Commission said the issue was kept such a secrete such that only the High Commissioner Rob Maccaire and two other people would know.“Rob and two other people would know,” said a senior official at the High Commission. Sources with the Police department also said they expected the couple to arrive anytime from yesterday afternoon.
There are just two exclusive resorts in this island —Mike’s Camp and Kiwayu Safari Village. The two resorts are right in the middle of the Kiunga Marine National Reserve and the Dodori and Boni reserves, where visitors can see cheetahs, giraffes, lions and elephants.
Mike’s Camp, also known as Munira Island Camp, is on Kiwayu Island itself. The trip by motorboat from Kiwayu Safari Village takes about 15 minutes. The camp has only seven rustic bungalows nestled along the ridge of the island, with exceptional views of the Indian Ocean to the east and watery mangrove forests to the west.
The Kiwayuu Safari Lodge, established in 1973 by Alfredo and Lisa Pelizzoli is described as "the perfect place to disappear" with miles of deserted beaches with soft white sand."There are few places in the world which can boast such seclusion," says an online brochure about the lodge. Across the dunes lie the Dodori and Boni Game Reserves.
The bandas— 18 in all spread along a kilometre of the sandy shore— are built according to the Swahili tradition with palm thatching and woven matting floors. “This is not a 5-star hotel: this is a 10-star hotel,” a guest from Geneva, Switzerland is quoted as saying about the bandas which consist of a suite comprising of a spacious bedroom, a dressing area with twin basins, a shower with solarheated hot water and bidet. Each private thatched veranda offers guests panoramic views across the lagoon from the comfort of the Swahili bed or hammocks which are hang over the bay.
The couple could also stay at the Baobabs of Kitangani which is an exclusive lodge which provides a couple or a family with a perfect setting and guarantee them total privacy.
The lodge consists of a living room perched under a giant baobab , leading a few steps away to a dazzling bedroom with spectacular panoramic view with ensuite facilities. A few more steps downwards lead to two beach bandas on the waters edge of the water , perfect for daytime lounging, refreshments , shade and swimming.
Staff and boatmen are will be at the service of the couple who can have their meals served in the bedroom or on the beach under the shade of the bandas. The staff are discreet and over a kilometer of beach is available for the couple as are water sports and other activities.
Munira Island Camp or Mike's Camp was started by Mike and Caroline Kennedy in the early nineties. The Island itself is 12 miles long by half a mile wide. There are lots of caves and coves to explore. There are also two villages on the Island: Kiwayu, an hour walk south and Chandani, 20 minutes walk north.
The camp is totally eco-friendly running on solar and wind power. The island has an extensive mangrove creek system ideal for bird watching and light tackle fishing as well as a six-mile virgin beach and spectacular snorkeling over a myriad of unspoilt coral reefs.
There are seven spacious bandas, built of makuti, each with panoramic views of the ocean and surrounds, all with total privacy. All bathroom suites are luxuriously equipped with the latest in Island plumbing.
