Share/Save/Bookmark Afro fusion singer Suzanna Owiyo launched her third album, My Roots, at the Carnivore in Nairobi on Wednesday night. The Kisumu 100 singer thrilled the audience with her songs off the album like Dhano Le, Idhe wa Kamande among others. The My Roots album tackles various social issues like corrupt politicians, good leaders, gratitude for being able to share in the beautiful gifts we all have been given by God, the dangers of alcohol abuse, with forgiveness, fathers who abandon their families, faithful friends, violence against women and addictions that lead to begging and inhibit development.
Suzanna skilfully serenaded her fans with the tunes from her new album some of which featured guest performances from Ohangla star Makadem and Zimbabwean legend Oliver Mtukudzi.
Suzanna known for her skill in playing the Nyatiti, told the audience that the single Uyie recorded with Oliver at R Kay’s studio saw her play her acoustic guitar during the recording, this was thanks to Oliver’s inspiration. The collaboration track is from her earlier album titled Mama Africa.
After performing his popular hits Todi and Nerea, Oliver said “I had to be here for my sister and for the cause to take the girl child to school.” A section of the proceeds will be donated to a girls' secondary school that Suzanna is yet to choose.
Makadem got the crowd on their feet as he performed his energetic hits like Kisumu Bound Bus and a Luo rendition of JB Maina’s hit Tiga Kumute. Other performances were by former Tusker Project Fame contestants Steve Nyabwa and Amelina.
