Ringera misses out on Supreme Court job

Former Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission director Aaron Ringera and Appellate judge Samuel Bosire are among thirty candidates who have failed to make the cut for the Supreme Court jobs.

The Judicial Service Commission Wednesday released the names of the 26 candidates shortlisted to fill the five positions for Judges of the country’s highest court. The shortlisted candidates will appear before the JSC for interviews from June 6-14.
Besides Justice Ringera and Justice Bosire, other prominent judges and lawyers who failed to make the shortlist include current Kacc deputy director Pravin Bowry, Judges Anyara Emukule, Jeanne Gacheche, G.B.M Kariuki and David Onyancha.
Others knocked out of the initial list of 56 applicants include former Truth, Justice and Reconciliation (TJRC) vice chairperson Betty Murungi, former judge Derek Schofield and Justice Lee Muthoga.
Justice Bosire and Justice Muthoga were among those who unsuccessfully applied to become the country’s next Chief Justice.
Among those who made the shortlist are ten women, including lawyer Njoki Ndung’u and a University of London law lecturer Prof Phoebe Okowa. Others include judges Kalpana Rawal, Hannah Okwengu, Mary Ang’awa, Ruth Sitati, Jessie Lesiit and Martha Koome.
Also shortlisted is the nominee for the post of deputy Chief Justice Nancy Barasa, chairperson of the Kenya Law Reform Commission Kathurima Minoti and former Kacc deputy director Dr Smokin Wanjala.
Other notable candidates for the post include judges Alnashir Visram, Joseph Nyamu, Jackton Ojwang, Riaga Omolo, Emanuel Okubasu, Philip Tunoi, Muga Apondi, Erastus Githinji, Mbogholi Msagha and Philip Waki.
Justices Visram, Nyamu, Omolo, Ang’awa, Msagha, Rawal, koome and Okwengu are among those who were interviewed by the JSC for the posts of Chief Justice and deputy Chief Justice but were unsuccessful.
The JSC is expected to pick five out of the 26 shortlisted applicants to join the CJ and deputy CJ on the seven-member Court.
The CJ will be the court’s president while the deputy CJ will be its vice president.
