The PNU Alliance has become the latest political party to be registered ahead of next year’s General Election.
The party applied for registration on January 13 this year and has since been issued with a provisional registration certificate.
Ten other parties are on the queue, while 47 political parties are fully registered.
Sources say the PNU Alliance is the party that Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and his allies are said to be touting as their party of choice.
However, according to Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny, talks are still underway between Mr Kenyatta’s camp and that of Eldoret North MP William Ruto for a party that will bring together their supporters and front one presidential candidate.
“We are still talking and the issue of a single party will come in at a later date. For now we are building trust among ourselves to avoid having fragile alliances that can be scattered with a simple political ploy."
If Mr Ruto and Mr Kenyatta don’t make it to the presidential race due to cases against them at the International Criminal Court, sources say they would sponsor Mr Eugene Wamalwa or Information Minister Samuel Poghisio for the top job.
When contacted, Mr Poghisio said: “It is too early to talk about the elections. But we already know what Kenyans want. Come that time, we will share it with them and lay bear what we have in store.”
Although Mr Wamalwa, during an interview, could not confirm his candidature under that arrangement, he said he was going for the presidency.
“What I can confirm is that I am in the race. But I can’t confirm that Mr Ruto and Mr Uhuru have supported my candidature. We are still in discussion to form a formidable team that would lead this country to the next level,” Mr Wamalwa said.
Among other newly-registered parties is the Restore and Build Kenya, that Education PS James ole Kiyiapi is associated with.
Prof Kiyiapi is the only one among the other presidential hopefuls who will not be running for a parliamentary seat.
His candidature also makes him the first PS to run for the presidency directly besides Kenneth Matiba and Simeon Nyachae who had to go to Parliament first.
“This is the party that has a real meaning to Kenya. I am among the founding members, but it also has officials. It is an ideological party,” the PS told Saturday Nation.
He disclosed that the new party will be launched soon, and added, it is time civil servants revealed parties they are associated with as provided for in the Bill of Rights.
