Share/Save/Bookmark ODM factions clashed at a special meeting held yesterday at the Coast. Differences between Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Eldoret North MP William Ruto's camps were evident when the groups clashed over leadership of the party.
The meeting organised by the ODM commissioners of elections Sharrif Shame and Paul Mbatha ended prematurely following a bitter exchange. The closed door meeting held at Koblenz Hall was aimed at sensitising the members over the upcoming elections on May 27 and 28. The members disagreed over the selection of ODM coordinators and the fee to be paid by members seeking elective posts.
In one instance, a group led by councillor Okoth Waudi, who was one time the ODM Mombasa coordinator, wondered why Mishi Mboko from Kwale, had been selected for the role.
The members protested against the Sh10,000 fee that would be charged to those vying for chairmanship positions, while Sh5,000 for those seeking elective posts in the wards and location. Voi mayor Anisa Hope Mwakio proposed that the Sh5,000 fee be lowered to Sh2,500 to increase competition.
One of the members allied to Raila was heard saying that "it was all about protecting Raila’s interests". But Shami clarified that the amount was being charged to ensure that ODM officials, including clerks, panelists and coordinators, are paid for the job.
One of the members claimed some individuals were attending the meeting to infiltrate as moles of the factions, and use the opportunity to ‘pull people their side’ ahead of the 2012 elections. They raised concern that unpopular members would be issued with certificates and thus set a bad precedent for the party.
Issues of allegiance to the party bigwigs were also at play, with each side trying to outdo the other over party issues. Mishi and Kilifi nominated councilor Beatrice Mboje, who is a women leader in the NEC were among those said to be supporting Raila while Waudi and other councils were pro-Balala/Ruto.
