In fact, I would go so far as to suggest they have probably never bowed their heads in prayer for their own children, their farms or country.
But the world — and Kenya — being what it is, they left their houses at the crack of dawn, found their way to JKIA — at their own expense no doubt — and later to Uhuru Park where they prayed earnestly.
I was not there. I didn’t watch TV so I have no idea what they asked God for. My only prayer, however, is that when they were asking God to shower two of the Ocampo Six with blessings, they remembered to pray for jobs as well.
Let’s face it. When Uhuru and Ruto were being prayed for, the Government was paying them. Even when they were telling Judge Ekaterina their names and villages of birth, their salary was trickling into their bank accounts.
But those thousands of fans squatting in the sun listening to these two were losing time and money.
Self-employmentI would be shocked if among them were house helps, watchmen, handcart pushers, matatu touts, maize roasters or mechanics. If you are in formal or self-employment, you will either get fired or sleep hungry if you spend your day praying for politicians.
That’s why it should worry these two leaders that the country they serve and love (remember those patriotic songs live from The Hague?) has an army of idle people who can turn up on a working day to pray when they had a whole Sunday to do just that.
It should also worry Raila’s ODM fraternity that they, too, have an army of idlers who are willing to fight for an opportunity to spend half a day praying for ‘IDPs’ at the same venue.
It’s mind boggling when you imagine that two sets of idlers are willing to fight for a venue because they want to tell God to help politicians and later walk home hungry. What do we take the big man upstairs for really?
Public prayerMeanwhile, someone has to make this clear. IDPs want to be resettled. They have no need for prayers. Trust me, IDPs started praying when hooligans fighting on behalf of politicians smashed their doors open, killed them, castrated them, raped their wives and children and torched their houses.
Their cries of pain and anguish reached the Lord with an eloquence that absolutely nothing that is said in a public prayer meeting ever will. And don’t for one second doubt that these wretched men and women still send impassioned pleas to their God — daily.
If we can’t apologise to IDPs, which no senior politician has so far done, if we won’t or can’t resettle them, let’s at least have the courtesy to shut up. No amount of prayer will cause land for their resettlement to miraculously become available.
