Gor Mahia win first unofficial 'Milk Derby'

By JAMES WAINDIMidfielder Kevin 'Baddy' Omondi came off the bench to score a brace and steer Gor Mahia to a 3-1 win over Thika United and win the unofficial "Milk Derby" at the Thika Municipal Stadium.
After Gor landed the Sh38 million sponsorship deal from dairy company Tuzo in mid week, the clash was hyped as a clash of diaries for Thika is also sponsored by a dairy company Brookside. Tuzo won the day.
On song Gor Mahia teenage striker Edwin Lavatsa opened the scores in the 25th minute with an individual goal, collecting the ball outside the box, before beating Thika’s Yusuf Onyango and curling in a left foot that gave Thika’s custodian David Okello no chance, to send the huge number of travelling Gor Mahia fans into celebrations as they chanted ‘Tuzo, tuzo!’

Lavatsa could have made it 2-0 at the stroke of half time, but saw his point blank header go narrowly wide.
On resumption, a rejuvinated Thika came back asking all the questions and should have levelled in the 46th minute through Kepha Aswani’s free kick. Their dominance paid off in the 52 minute when Gor custodian Jerim Onyango spilled Kenneth Wendo’s strike and Moses Arita was quick to pounce to level the scores.
Sensing danger, coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno introduced Kevin Omondi for Odera in the 65th minute and he made an impact two minutes later, scoring after a neat build involving Wycliffe Opondo and Lavatsa.
Omondi added the tally in the 83rd minute, this time scoring against the run of play.
