Share/Save/Bookmark The government will stand by Somalia's Transitional Federal Government in helping bring peace and stability in the war-torn country, Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has said.
Raila gave the assurance at a joint press briefing with visiting Somalia Prime Minister Mohamed Abdullahi. “The government recognises the TFG in Mogadishu. We have been giving them support by training their officers. We are happy with the progress the TFG has made in crashing the Al Shabaab,” said Raila.
Earlier, the two held closed-door discussions which touched on border security among other issues, according to sources. The Transitional Federal Government premier said his country will not participate in a high level meeting scheduled for Nairobi next week. But Raila said yesterday said the Somali government had suggested that the meeting be held in Mogadishu.
Somalia’s embattled Prime Minister Mohamed Abdullahi thanked the Kenya government and the people for the support given to Somalia.“Kenya is hosting thousands of Somali refugees and has been supporting the cause of peace in Somalia,” said Abdullahi.“My government is working hard to fight Al Shabaab and this will be beneficial to our Kenyan brothers,” Abdullahi said.
A decision by Somalia’s Council of Ministers to extend its mandate by one year has been criticised heavily by the international community. The term of the Transitional Federal Institutions expires in August.
