Issack to lead AU team to Nigerian polls

Share/Save/Bookmark INTERIM Independent Electoral Commission chair Ahmed Issack will lead an African Union observer mission to the Nigerian presidential elections next Saturday.
Issack who has successfully steered the interim polls body to regain lost public confidence in the electoral process was appointed by African Union Commission chairperson Jean Ping and is already in Nigeria.
He is leading a team of 40 members drawn from elections management bodies, national parliaments, the Pan African Parliament, ambassadors, eminent persons and members of civil societies from African countries.
Egypt, Kenya, Malawi and Uganda also sponsored delegates to the mission. The mission is assisted by a team of technical staff from the AU Commission headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.“The purpose of the mission is to make an objective, independent and impartial observation of the national assembly and presidential elections,” IIEC communication’s manager Tabitha Mutemi told the Star.
Issack and his team are expected to determine whether the national assembly and presidential elections are conducted in accordance with the country’s constitution, electoral laws, other appropriate laws and the guidelines.
He will also gauge the satisfaction of participating political parties, evaluate the level of voters awareness, identify electoral malpractices, establish the veracity of the results and evaluate the adequacy of voting, counting and tallying of the results.
