Water minister Charity Ngilu made a big return to her Kitui constituency yesterday after a four-month absence. Ngilu was mopped by enthusiastic supporters moments after her chopper landed at Ithookwe.
The minister accompanied her Medical Services counterpart Anyang Nyong’o who was set to launch a centre of excellence in family planning and reproductive health at KMTC, Kitui campus.
Ngilu apologised to her constituents for her long absence but said she had been recuperating at her Nairobi home after being taken ill. “Happy new year, I have missed you a lot and I know you have missed me too. I’m so happy to be home at last,” Ngilu told the cheering crowd.
The minister was last seen in Kitui in December during the burial of a Mombasa businessman where she dared President Kibaki and PM Raila to sack her.
Ngilu said the corruption allegation in her ministry was the work of her political detractors whom she said would be defeated in due time.“You know when you are a good leader like I am, some people would want to bring you down but they will be defeated,” she said as the crowd cheered wildly.
The minister said now that she has been declared innocent by the Parliamentary Committee on Lands and Natural Resources, she is optimistic that she will win the other cases being investigated by the KACC.
Ngilu told her constituents to remain calm and ignore all the allegations levelled against her, saying she will always work to improve their welfare.
The minister reiterated that she was now back in full force in her ministry and appealed to her constituents to be wary of “jealous people who are driven by malice and witchhunt to bring me down” “Ignore what has been said about me, those are empty debes (tins) that will always make irrelevant noise,” she said.
Ngilu’s convoy which included hired bodaboda riders snaked through Kitui town taking the town by storm as many curious people cheered her.
