Don’t blame Raila for trials, say lawmakers

Lawmakers allied to Prime Minister Raila Odinga have criticised some of the Ocampo Six, saying their attempts to drag the PM’s name into their problems would not succeed.

Led by Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi, the more than 40 MPs accused suspended Higher Education minister William Ruto and Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta of trying to wrongly tarnish the PM’s name.
“Those summoned to appear before the International Criminal Court (ICC) should present themselves quietly before the Pre-Trial Chamber judges without causing mayhem,’’ he said.
He was addressing a rally at Mumboha Grounds in Luanda town, Vihiga County. Mr Odinga also spoke at the rally.
Mr Mudavadi said that neither the PM nor President Kibaki were privy to the names in the Waki envelope.
Mr Mudavadi and Lands minister James Orengo said that Kenya as a nation was not under trial by the International Criminal Court and wondered on what basis the country had sent a plea to stop trial over post-election violence.
He said Mr Odinga was being targeted because he had won the hearts of Kenyans, who view him as the only 2012 presidential candidate with the potential to transform the country.
The Prime Minister steered clear of The Hague debate despite incessant chants of “Let them go to The Hague’’ from an emotional crowd.
At the same time, Immigration minister Otieno Kajwang’ has called on the PNU side of the coalition to focus on judicial reforms instead of continuing to fight the ICC process against the six main suspects of the poll chaos.
He said the ICC judges are convinced that the six should appear before the court and efforts by a section of the government to stop the process was a waste of time and taxpayers’ money.
