Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Sunday called on Kenyans to dismiss leaders who were asking them to get larger families.

Odinga said following the population census results released last week that showed one approximately one million children were born in Kenya each year, there is need for family planning programmes to create an environment where people get families that they can adequately support.

He said for the aspirations of the country's economic blueprint Vision 2030 to be realized, population growth should not be higher, but should grow in tandem with the country's economic growth.

At the same time the PM dismissed leaders who were asking members of their communities to procreate more children so as to increase their ethnic numbers saying the calls were retrogressive.

The PM was speaking at Kanyamkago,in Uriri constituency during the burial of former area MP Herman Odhiambo Mambo.

He allayed fears that smaller communities would be marginalized in the county governments saying to the contrary, counties would bring services close to the people.

He noted that the interests of smaller communities would be catered for within the 47 newly created counties countrywide where they will be fully represented.

"Counties will provide prospects for an equal society as resources will go directly to the people for employment and wealth creation," he said.

Odinga at the same time hailed Kenyans for voting overwhelmingly for a new constitution that he said would usher in positive development and a better future for the country.

Odinga said that the new set of laws provides an opportunity for building the country on a firm foundation: "A new Kenya devoid of tribalism and where all citizens are united," he said.
