VP calls on politicians to avoid hate campaigns

Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has urged political leaders to develop a new culture under the new constitutional dispensation.

Mr. Musyoka said for the new constitution to portray change and renewal, politicians must avoid parochial politics driven by smear campaigns, name calling and use of abusive language.

"We must raise the standard of our politics to match with our aspirations under a new constitutional order. Things like inciting others and shouting down bishops in public forums should be a thing of the past," he said.

The Vice President was speaking on Sunday during the consecration and enthronement of Canon Joel Waweru Mwangi as the second bishop of the Diocese of Nairobi at St. Stephens Cathedral Church, Jogoo Road.

The consecration ceremony was led by Archbishop Dr. Eliud Wabukala, the presiding bishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya.

Mr. Musyoka recognized the role the church plays in nation building and urged the bishops not to fear to speak out about vices like corruption in the country.

National Assembly Speaker Mr. Kenneth Marende congratulated the new bishop and called on all Kenyans to live like brothers and sisters and forget the past and continue building the nation.

Bishop Mwangi said the church must be relevant to the needs of the people and thanked all Christians for the support they gave him.

He said the church would continue to hold the government accountable to the people and urged leaders to continue the fight against corruption.
