Cattle raiders kill one in Kenyan Village

The raiders made away with over 500 cattle.

One person was killed and a 15 year old boy seriously injured after a dawn attack in Kawap village in Samburu North.

The raiders who are said to be over 60 ambushed the unknowing villagers and made away with over 500 cattle.

The local leaders have condemned the incident saying it is time the communities embraced peace and did away with the retrogressive practise.

According to the Area police boss Hesborn Kadenge, the cattle rustlers armed with sophisticated weapons over powered the local police reservists who were stationed at the village.

Kadenge added that security officers from regular and administration units have been deployed to the area to pursue the attackers.

End impunity

About 78 households have been left with no source of livelihood and the Kenya Red Cross Society says they are tasked to respond to the situation.

The irate residents had a heated argument with the police officers in the area whom they blame for their continued slow response to such incidences.

The area councillor is now calling on the security officers to ensure they pursue the raiders and recover the stolen livestock terming it the only way to end impunity among the communities.

Tension still remains high in the area following the raid and several leaders are calling on the government to ensure the stolen animals are recovered.

The incident comes a month after an administration police officer was killed and four others seriously injured. No animals were stolen.

Revenge mission

Meanwhile, police in Kuria East district are still pursuing hundreds of Maasai youths who torched seven houses in what is suspected to be a revenge mission to a cattle rustling attack against them.

Area policed chief Paul Wanjama said no body had been arrested by yesterday evening over a clash between members of the Kuria and Maasai communities, which saw the houses burnt later.

He said trouble started when some residents from Koromangucha in Kuria East crossed over to Masurura Location in Trans Mara and shot a Masaai man on the leg with a gun thus, prompting the clashes between the two communities.

A group of members of Kuria residents reportedly crossed over to Trans Mara side and stole10 goats from Masurura, a move that angered the youth from Maasai, who immediately set ablaze the 7 houses, said Mr. Wanjama

The OCPD said that following the high tension in the area, security has now been beefed up at Koromangucha Sub-Location in Nyabasi North location in an effort to stop a recur of an impending attack directed on either side.
