The push for affirmative action is now taking shape.

With the new constitution providing for a one third (1/3) women representation in both elective and appointive positions, the federation of women lawyers-FIDA is now demanding that this requirement be honored, and women lawyers be considered in the appointment of persons to serve in top positions.

The federation says it will keenly follow the implementation the new constitution to ensure that more women are represented.

The offices the women lawyers are eyeing include those of the Chief Justice, Attorney General and the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The chairperson Naomi Wageraka called on women not to shy away from contending key positions in commissions which will be set up to implement the constitution.

"Come out, give your applications and do whatever is necessary to make sure that you get these positions. We want to see 50 percent women representation in all these commissions because even when we look at the statistics of this country, women represent 52-53 percent of the population," she said.

She also reiterated the federation intent to carry out civic education to create more awareness among the public.

The new law stipulates that a minimum of a third (1/3) of positions in public service be granted to women.

FIDA also said that it would ensure gender equality was maintained in political parties as directed by the new Constitution.

"Political parties will have powers to nominate people who sit in the Senate and the Parliament and we want women to position themselves in the political parties," said Ms Wagereka.
