Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka and Higher Education minister William Ruto on Friday discouraged calls for political alliances.

The two, who were addressing a graduation ceremony at Mt Kenya University in Thika, instead asked leaders to unite Kenyans as they ushered in the new constitutional dispensation.

“We need an alliance of all Kenyans and not a group of a few selfish politicians. I am appealing to my friends in the media to scale down the hype being given to political groupings,” the VP said.

Sharing platform

It was the first time that the two were sharing a platform after the referendum on the new Constitution. Mr Ruto campaigned against the new set of laws while the VP supported the new Constitution.

“The new Constitution is getting the country to another level. Let us not go there as ‘Yes’ or ‘No’, ‘Green’ or ‘Red’, but as one united nation,” Mr Musyoka said.

On his part, Mr Ruto asked Kenyans to forget the differences that may have cropped up during the referendum campaigns and move together to make the new law a reality.

“As we come to the dawn of the Second Republic, it is not time to apportion blame or look for scapegoats but to face the challenges of implementing the new laws,” said the Eldoret North MP.

He challenged institutions of higher learning to develop systems that were in line with a new constitutional dispensation.

Former Cabinet minister Njenga Karume, who received an honorary degree from the university, praised Mr Ruto for exhibiting political maturity even after members of his ‘No’ team were left out of the parliamentary implementation committee.

Mr Karume and Rwandan educationist Zulfat Mukarebega were awarded doctorate degrees for their exemplary roles in business and education respectively.
