Nema delays construction of Mau-Summit-Kericho-Kisumu-Busia road

By Peter Opiyo

National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) will only issue certificate, clearing construction of a Kenya Uganda Road after September 6.

This emerged in Parliament on Wednesday after

Nyando MP, Fred Outa sought clearance from government on what has delayed the construction of the Mau-Summit-Kericho-Kisumu-Busia road despite the contractor, IBS Israeli, being ready to undertake the repairs.

Outa said it has taken three months since the contactor arrived at the site yet no work has begun accusing NEMA of failing to give the contractor a green light for the construction of the crucial road.

NEMA yet to issue certificate

Outa wants the Minister for Environment to explain to the House why NEMA is yet to issue a certificate to the company.

The environmental Authority is reported to have said that it is yet to issue a certificate because the 30-day complaint period has not expired.

NEMA said it called for any public complaint through the print media on August 6 and is awaiting response before it can issue a go ahead certificate to the contractor.

Environment Minister John Michuki was not in the House but Medical Services Assistant Minister Kazungu Kambi undertook to pass the message to him.

A ministerial statement is expected on Wednesday next week.
