Lobbying has intensified ahead of the establishment of a parliamentary committee that will supervise the implementation of the new Constitution.

On Wednesday, MPs who opposed the new law during the referendum demanded to be included in the Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee that will establish and supervise the Commission on the Implementation of the Constitution.

Separately, Igembe South MP Mithika Linturi and his Mosop counterpart David Koech warned of attempts to lock out ‘No’ members from the oversight team and demanded that appointments to the organ be done in a free and fair manner.

“Those saying we should be excluded should realise that the new Constitution will not apply only to those who voted ‘Yes’ but to all of us,” Mr Linturi noted.

He warned that Parliament will find it difficult to pass the 49 laws required to implement the new Constitution if it isolates ‘No’ MPs.

Mr Koech accused joint Government Chief Whip Jakoyo Midiwo of playing to the gallery by claiming that MPs who opposed the new law are ineligible to sit on the new committee.
