The Mombasa International Show, which has attracted 182 international and local exhibitors, starts this morning ahead of Thurday’s opening by President Kibaki.

Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) Mombasa chairman Anthony Mrima said at least 30 international exhibitors and 152 locals will showcase their products at the event that ends on Sunday.

Security beefed up

International exhibitors from China, Iran, Belgium, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, among other countries, are taking part in the show.

Mr Mrima said exhibition hours would be extended to midnight to allow Muslims, who begin the holy fast of Ramadhan this week, to attend.

“Muslims will be fasting during the show and we have extended opening times to midnight so that they can participate,” he said.

Coast provincial commissioner Ernest Munyi assured exhibitors and showgoers that security had been beefed up. He said regular and Administration police would patrol the grounds round the clock.

“We assure exhibitors and showgoers that security has been heightened and they conduct their business day and night,” he said. Mr Munyi appealed to Kenyans to come to the show and learn modern farming methods.

Meanwhile, ASK chief executive officer Batram Muthoka said about 240 judges yesterday began adjudicating trade stands, livestock, farm and dairy and home industry exhibits.
