Former President Daniel Moi has appealed to the Government of Sudan to speed up the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

Part of the deal calls for a referendum to determine whether the south should secede from the north.

At the same time, Southern Sudan has appealed to the Kenyan Government to convene an immediate meeting with the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (Igad) to address the situation in Sudan concerning the referendum.

"Delay will not serve the country well and may lead to bloodshed. If they do not want to go through a referendum then naturally the people of Southern Sudan will decide what to do," Moi said.

There has been uncertainty over the vote scheduled for January following reports it may be postponed. The referendum was a key part of the 2005 peace agreement that ended more than 20 years of fighting. Calling on Igad and international community, the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission said there were attempts to sabotage the exercise.
