Kibaki tells Kenyans to decide

President Mwai Kibaki Tuesday appealed to Kenyans to seize the existing historic moment and exercise their constitutional right which will determine the destiny of their nation.

In a radio and television address to the nation, President Kibaki reminded Kenyans that by participating in Wednesday's referendum, they will embark on a journey that will open a new chapter in the country's rich history.

The Head of State said, "After a consultative and comprehensive constitution review process, we have now come to a defining moment in our nation's history."

The President said that participation in the referendum was a call on Kenyans to determine how they wish Kenya to be governed.

Calling for unity and clear focus on the task ahead, the President called upon Kenyans to individually play their noble task of building a great nation at peace with itself and respected among the family of nations.

He affirmed, "God placed us in a beautiful country, Kenya. Let us remain united and focused on the work ahead. As we recite from our National Anthem "may we dwell in Unity, peace and Liberty."

Urging Kenyans to turn out in large numbers and to vote peacefully, President Kibaki assured that security had been beefed up in all parts of the country to enable Kenyans vote.

The Head of State reminded Kenyans to embrace one another as brothers and sisters adding that the task ahead of them was to vote for a future full of hope, progress and stability.

The President said, "I appeal to Kenyans to turn out and cast their votes in large numbers. Let us do so peacefully. Let us also embrace one another as brothers and sisters even after the referendum."

He noted that the conclusion of the constitution review process would enable the citizens to shift focus to the urgent work of nation building and creating adequate opportunities for Kenyans, who want to move on and enable the country take its rightful place among the bigger family of nations.
