Raila-Ruto rift costs ODM civic seats in polls

The fallout between Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Higher Education minister William Ruto seems to have cost ODM a number of civic seats in its perceived strongholds during by-elections held on Monday.

However, the Orange party still clinched many civic seats in the polls.

Mr Odinga’s supremacy war with Mr Ruto may have cost the party two civic seats it previously held in South Rift.

The two seats, in Chepalungu and Ainamoi constituencies, went to Kanu and Nicholas Biwott’s New Vision Party, despite MPs from the region allied to Mr Ruto putting up spirited campaigns for the United Democratic Movement.

Kanu’s Richard Koech won the Kaptengwet civic seat previously held by ODM’s Ebelas Laboso while NVP’s Ronald Kiprono Rob won the Sigor civic seat formerly held by Zakayo Kilel of ODM. Both ODM candidates have since died.

UDM’s Nancy Alphina Kilel came second with 881 votes while ODM’s Anne Sitonik only managed 149 votes.

In Nandi District, ODM also lost the Chepterit civic seat to Kanu’s Lucy Chepkwony.

Bounced back

However, it bounced back to clinch the Chemelil seat.

Other seats won by ODM are North Gem and the Central Uyoma. The party also retained the Mwembe Tayari and Changamwe civic seats.
The party also won a civic seat in Mwatate constituency, beating Kanu by eight votes.

In Arsim ward of Samburu West District, PNU’s Hadisha Christina made history by becoming the first woman to be elected in the Samburu community, beating ODM.
