'No' team claims Kalonzo is their man

A team of leaders opposed to the Proposed Constitution has called on the Kamba to reject the draft law at the referendum. They claimed the Vice-President was with them, with one MP petitioning Kalonzo Musyoka to defect to their camp.

The 'No' team, which has been on a two-day campaign blitz in Ukambani, voters to reject against the draft, which they said would divide Kenyans.

The team of politicians and top clergy from mainstream and evangelical churches took their campaign on Saturday to upper Ukambani in Kangundo and Matungulu districts. The area MP Johnstone Muthama, who is also the acting Government whip in Parliament, is in the ‘Yes’ camp.

On Saturday, Redeemed Gospel Church Bishop Wilfred Lai and MPs Kiema Kilonzo (Mutito), Peter Kiilu (Makueni), Julius Kones (Konoin), Victor Munyaka (Machakos Town), and former Kangundo MP Moffat Maitha said the proposed law had failed to address contentious issues relating to land, Kadhi courts, abortion, and devolution.

Kiilu, a former PC, urged provincial administrators not to be fooled that their jobs were secure.

The ‘Reds’ addressed rallies at ol-Ndonyo Sabuk, Kwa Mwaura, and Kisukioni trading centres before winding up their campaigns in Tala and Kangundo.

On Saturday, Kiema sent a passionate appeal to Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka to defect to the ‘No’ camp.

"He must know Ukambani is ‘Red’ and no amount of wooing would change our stand," said Kiema.

Kones, who represented Eldoret North MP and Cabinet Minister William Ruto during the rallies, claimed Kalonzo was in their camp but would join them at the appropriate moment.

Kalonzo has repeatedly denied he was sympathetic to the ‘No’ camp
