Six people among them two senior police officers Sunday evening perished in a grisly accident along Mwingi-Thika highway.
The 5pm accident which involved a private saloon car and a Nissan matatu occurred at Kivandini area some 10 km away from Matuu town.
Three people including the two police officers died on the spot while three others who were traveling in the Nissan matatu succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at the Matuu district hospital.
The dead police officers were Superintendent of Police Damaris Kali attached to the Railway police station, Nairobi and Benjamin Kitonga of the Criminal Investigations Department, Kiambu district.
The deceased officers who hail from Migwani district were traveling back to their work stations.
According to the Matuu Base Commander Nelson Omwenga the vehicles were traveling in opposite direction when they were involved in a head on collision.
The saloon car was headed to Nairobi while the nissan matatu was headed for Mwingi.
The police boss said the driver of the saloon car was speeding when he lost control and collided head on with the Nissan matatu.
He added that the two survivors in the saloon car and nine others in the Nissan were rushed to the Matuu district hospital in critical condition where they were hospitalized.
" Three of them however died while undergoing treatment. Those seriously injured were transferred to Thika and Kenyatta National hospitals for specialized treatment".
The bodies were removed to the Matuu district mortuary while the extensively damaged vehicles were towed to the Matuu police station.
