A police officer from Kasarani has shot and seriously injured a man in Kasarani's Zimman settlement scheme following a land tussle. George Wanjau was shot in the right arm outside the scheme's offices today at 7.30pm.
Youths from the scheme have been holding a week long peaceful demonstration against a neighbouring tiles manufacturing company that has allegedly grabbed a public land on the Thika superhighway. Clayworks Limited has fenced the land adjacent to its factory and is claiming ownership.
The Zimman settlement scheme chairman Francis Kirima said the officer shot at them at a close range." We had just closed our office and walked outside when the officer shot at us.
The land in dispute is 100 meters away, what did the officer come to do outside our office?" Kirima inquired. Armed policemen have been guarding the disputed property for two weeks now.
Kirima said the hired police are targeting him for his stand against land grabbing. He said he will support the youth to defend public utilities in the area. Kasarani OCPD Augustin Nthumbi was unavailable for comment.
