A swarm of bees, apparently attracted by perfume, disrupted Lands Secretary Charity Ngilu’s meeting at Kwale Land Registry offices on Monday. Ngilu was meeting land officials outside the registry’s offices in Kwale when bees attacked them.
She was forced to cut short her speech as everyone ran for safety. Ngilu was with county commissioner Evans Achoki, county Lands executive Ali Mafimbo, Kwale Lands registrar Charles Ng’etich and National director of physical planning Augustine Masinde.
County director of veterinary services Ronald Nderigo said the bees might have been attracted by a perfume used by some participants. “Bees are attracted to crowded areas by perfumes. It is dangerous to use certain perfumes in areas known for bee-keeping,” he said.
Ngilu later addressed land officials outside the survey offices. She asked the officials to fight land grabbing. Ngilu said the Lamu land title deeds, revoked by President Uhuru Kenyatta last week, were signed by land officials to defraud innocent locals.
“Those caught in fraud land cases will not be tolerated, the law will take its course, so let us be very careful. When you see I complain about you, just know there is something going on because the world is digital and I receive information every day in my phone,” she said.
Ngilu said Kwale county is plagued by land grabbing. She said officials have the responsibility of changing public perception of the lands department.
“It will not be fair for anyone of you to be found helping a tycoon to grab land from innocent people. Lands offices have curses because innocent people lose their property in our offices.”
