Two Kitui Catholic Diocese employees were arrested on Saturday following murder of the Kitui deputy CID boss Zebedeyo Maina have been released.
Daniel Nguma a mechanic at the Kitui polytechnic and George Kavindu who is a driver of the Kitui Catholic Secretariat, were found to have nothing do with the killing of the ex-Kwekwe squad boss.
The two were arrested on suspicion of abducting a five-year-old girl from Ruai in Nairobi after they were identified the child’s mother Wambui Njogu during a botched rescue operation in which the officer was killed. They were initially said to have shot the officer dead as they resisted arrest.
Njogu was in a car carrying CID officers following a lead to the suspected kidnappers who had been traced to an area around Envy Bar on Mama Ngina Street in Kitui town.
The CID head of investigations Mohammed Amin ordered the release of the two suspects after the kidnapped girl's mother failed to positively identify Nguma and Kavindu as the kidnappers.
The Kitui CID county director Julius Sunkuli confirmed that the duo was set free after it was established that their arrest was a case of mistaken identity.
“It has turned out to be a clear case of mistaken identity,” said Sunkuli.
The two were locked up at the Kitui police station but Nguma, who had suffered a bullet wound, was also admitted to Kitui District Hospital where remained under armed police guard until yesterday.
Kavindu was on Monday hurriedly whisked to Nairobi where he was arraigned before a court of law. He was however held at the Ruai police station.
Amin said Njogu who had earlier identified the duo as the kidnappers, was unable to confirm their identities them during various identification parades on Wednesday.
