Corridors of Power

Thursday, August 8, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY POLITICAL DESK
The conduct of officers at Buru Buru police station was a subject a furious debate of an emergency meeting of all senior police officers in the division. The policemen are known to collude with some of the criminal gangs operating in the larger Eastlands area. This came to light on Monday when nine members of a hang operating in Umoja’s zone nine were arrested and locked up at Buru Buru Police Station. On Tuesday they were taken to Makadara law courts but were never charged. When journalists following up on the arrest asked why the nine were not charged and were actually in an office at the Buru Buru police station, the policemen quickly returned the nine suspects to court where they were charged with robbery! Question is, will the charges be followed through or will the suspects soon be back on the streets harassing law abiding citizens?

Litigants in an assault case involving a politician who was once known for freely giving out money are worried that their case will lead nowhere. The man is alleged to have handled an unlicensed gun which he used to threaten the litigants. However, the file went missing and only reappeared when the media started asking questions about the outcome of the case. The top magistrate at the Kibera law Courts then recalled the file and allocated the case to another magistrate. But there has been no movement on the case either and the litigants are at a loss about what to do to get justice.

Two senior police officers on a working retreat in Mombasa nearly came to blows when one of them started talking badly of one of their bosses claiming he was "petty" and thrived on 'gossip.' What the officer did not know is that his colleague is a protege of the top cop he was badmouthing. The man took umbrage at his colleague and threatened to thrash him unless he apologized. The 'mouthy' cop had no option but to sheepishly apologize for speaking out of turn.

The behavior of a CEO in one of the parastatals is causing concern among his staff. The man who rarely talks to his staff or even his subordinates tends to lock himself in his office. And when he emerges, the man talks to himself and goes into a rage when he meets with any of his staff in the corridors. His colleagues suspect that the stress of the job or the fact that he lost his bid to become principal secretary may have psychologically affected the man.
