NAMES: 10 government officials in TROUBLE over POST ELECTION VIOLENCE

Tuesday, the 12th of February 2013 -The Kenyan DAILY POST has learnt that eighteen victims of the 2007/2008 post election violence are planning to sue ten government officials for crimes against humanity inflicted upon them during that dark hour of Kenya’s history.

Most of the 18 PEV victims in the suit either hail from Nyanza or the Rift Valley region of the country which bore the brunt of the post-poll violence.

Nyanza’s gripe with the government arises from what was seen as a disproportionate response by police officers to the protests by residents. A Human Rights Watch report titled ‘From ballots to bullets’ released after the chaos recounted how police had used live bullets to mow down the protesting residents.

Most of the violence in the Rift Valley was inter-ethnic, pitting members of the Kikuyu and Kalenjin communities against each other.

The ten government officials being sued are Attorney General Prof. Githu Muigai, Macharia Njeru, the chairman of the Independent Police Oversight Authority – IPOA, Keriako Tobiko, the Director of Public Prosecutions and David Kimaiyo, the newly appointed Inspector General of Police enjoined in the case as respondents.

Others are Mohamed Ali, former Commissioner of Police, Kinuthia Mbugua – former AP Commandant, Grace Kaindi – Deputy Inspector General of Police and former Nyanza PPO, Paul Olando – former Provincial Commissioner Nyanza province, Hassan Noor Hassan – former PC Rift Valley and Everett Wasige – former PPO Rift Valley province.

More to follow.
