Man dies over Sh20 dispute

By Cyrus Ombati

NAIROBI, KENYA: A man was on Thursday night killed after being thrown out of a moving matatu over Sh20 fare dispute along Nairobi’s Juja Road.

The man, who police say is a breakdown attendant, disagreed with the matatu tout over the fare before he was pushed out at about 11pm.

The vehicle was racing to the city centre with passengers when the disagreement happened in Pangani area, witnesses told police. The driver of the matatu sped off and police say they are yet to arrest the crew or get the vehicle.

Starehe OCPD Samuel Anampiu says police have details of the vehicle and a hunt on it is ongoing. He has however appealed to the crew to surrender to police to facilitate investigations.

“It is better they come and record a statement for us to know what happened,” he said.

A similar incident happened in January in Kawangware area, Nairobi where a woman was killed over a Sh10 fare dispute. Locals turned on the matatu and burnt it.

The 23-year old woman had Sh20 that she intended to pay as her fare to the city centre, but the tout told her the she had to pay Sh30.
This prompted an argument before the tout reportedly shoved her out of the moving vehicle. She fell on the road and was run over by an oncoming matatu.
The driver sped off leaving the vehicle that ran over her at the scene. The crowd that had gathered at the scene started protesting and set the mini-bus on fire.
Meanwhile, a man stabbed another man to death following a dispute over a woman in Nairobi’s Kitengela area.
Police and witnesses say the two had been quarrelling in a residential compound before one of them picked up a knife and stabbed the other killing him on the spot.
Police say they are yet to arrest the accused person but the hunt for him is on-going.
