Group seeks probe on Kabogo hate speech claim

The Hindu Council of Kenya wants the National Cohesion and Integration Commission to investigate Juja MP William Kabogo for hate speech.
According to a statement by the council, the MP uttered provocative hate speech remarks targeted at the Asian community during a public rally in Kiambu where he is seeking a gubernatorial seat.
A story carried by a local newspaper on October 17 quoted Mr Kabogo vowing to give priority to the indigenous Kiambu residents over the dominant Asian traders if elected.

“For a long time we have been dominated by the Asians who own industries in the county.
"The products are sold elsewhere without the residents of Kiambu getting any benefits,” the newspaper quoted Mr Kabogo.
In asking the commission to investigate the MP, the council’s national chairman Swaran Varma said Mr Kabogo’s statement went against Articles 19(2),27 and 28 of the Constitution, which protect human rights and fundamental freedoms, equality and ensure human dignity is protected respectively.
The statements, he added were meant to incite locals.
