ODM candidate for the Ndhiwa parliamentary seat in the September 17 by-election was at the weekend endorsed by 16 aspirants who lost in the party nominations. The losers agreed to support Agustino Neto after a meeting with Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Kisumu on Saturday night.
The meeting was called by the PM to reconcile the aspirants who had vowed to campaign against Neto citing malpractices in the nominations. Raila convinced them that a loss to the party is a loss to them and will also hurt his presidential bid. During the meeting at the Kisumu Rock Motel the aspirants pledged to support the ODM candidate and dismissed reports that they are campaigning against the party.
''The nominations were very expensive and any anomalies that were detected will be corrected in future nominations. It is true the exercise was below the expectation of many aspirants,'' said Raila. The aspirants accused a section of ODM MPs of spoiling the party and agreed to work together. They said they will hold a joint press conference to dispel romours that they are supporting the Kanu candidate for the seat. Three aspirants who did attend the meeting sent their apologies citing business engagement while four of them were in another meeting.
