A team of investigators is in Mombasa to begin a probe into the death of controversial cleric, Sheik Aboud Rogo. The team that comprises both government and private agencies will be receiving submissions from key witnesses among them the immediate family of the murdered Sheikh. The detectives will also visit the site of the murder.
A Mombasa human rights lobby group had asked the Director of Public Prosecution Keriako Tobiko to disqualify one of the members of the team siting a conflict of interest. Muslim for Human Rights lobby group wants Edward Okello from the DPP’s office removed. Muhuri said Okello has acted as the prosecutor in at least two different cases against Rogo, and "will be biased in the dispensation of his duties as a member of the probe team.”
The DPP has since replaced Okello with State council Vincent Monda. The team is in a closed door meeting in the Attorney General's office. A press briefing has been scheduled for 4 p.m. The findings of the investigation are to be submitted to the DPP in two weeks.
