Kenya National Union of Teachers secretary general David Okuta appeared in public for the first time in three weeks to call off the teachers' strike. An ailing Okuta, who was discharged from hospital on September 16, thanked teachers for remaining steadfast during the period of the strike.
“I was in constant consultation with all the negotiations that took place between the union and government,” Okuta said, and thanked Education minister Mutula Kilonzo for accepting teachers' demands. Okuta then called off the strike at the entrance of Knut House where the proceedings temporarily interrupted operations at Equity Bank.
In a low, measured voice, Okuta asked teachers to resume work today at 8am. PS George Godia was also present. Okuta was assisted by his sons and wife to board a Toyota Prado immediately after he called off the strike. Okuta fell ill a day before the start of the strike on September 3.
