Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo on Tuesday recorded a statement with the CID in connection with his claims of a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Mr Midiwo arrived at CID Headquarters in Nairobi at around 2.05pm followed closely by his lawyer, Mr James Orengo.
They headed to the office of Investigations Bureau boss Mohammed Amin where he recorded his statement for two-and-a-half hours before leaving in the company of 15 ODM legislators.
Done my duty
The Government Chief Whip told a funeral in Bondo at the weekend also attended by Mr Odinga that a plot to kill the PM had been hatched.
The Gem MP implicated Prof Sam Ongeri in the plot.
Mr Midiwo told journalists he would stand by what he said and that he had furnished the police with all the information he had. “I have done my duty and it is now upon them to act,” he said.
And on Tuesday, the national cohesion team upbraided MP Jakoyo Midiwo for his remarks.
National Cohesion and Integration Commission chairman Mzalendo Kibunjia censured the Gem MP, saying: “Mr Midiwo should have first reported the matter to the police.
“The commission has received credible reports regarding tensions mounting between the Luos and Kisiis following the statement by Mr Midiwo,” Dr Kibunjia said.
He appealed to the two communities to co-exist peacefully and put the interests of the country first.
“The statement by Mr Midiwo, whether true or not, is of a serious nature,” Dr Kibunjia said.
On Tuesday, Nyanza police boss Njue Njagi said residents from Prof Ongeri’s Nyaribari Chache Constituency had threatened to demonstrate over the Gem MP’s allegations against the Foreign Affairs minister.
The planned demonstration was stopped by police who assured them the matter was under investigation.
“The police have kept the situation calm and there is no need for unrest because investigations are in progress,” Mr Njagi.
Mr Kibunjia said the commission had written to the MP.
“Leaders need to be alive to the fact that their statements can inflame passions, incite and cause tension and even violent conflict between communities,” he said.
“The two principals also have a duty to continue holding the country together as they have done in the last four years.”
Mr Kibunjia said this responsibility is greater now more than ever “considering that our politics are tribal, regional and that ethnic interest, not ideologies, drive Kenyan campaigns.”
“We are coming out very strongly because it is our determination to break the cycle of violence in this General Election.” Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko has ordered the police to investigate the alleged assassination plot.
“The gravity and magnitude of the allegations, particularly during this period, cannot be over-emphasised,” Mr Tobiko said.
