Those facing criminal charges at the ICC should be allowed to vie for the presidency.
Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka on Sunday said stopping them will only create unnecessary tension.
“Let the playing ground in the next presidential contest be even. We should not block individuals because of the ICC trials at The Hague,” the VP said.
Mr Musyoka said top organs in the government were exploring all options and soon the possibility of ICC suspects, Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto advancing their presidential ambitions would be a reality.
Speaking during the consecration and installation of the first Arch-bishop of the African Brotherhood Church Rev Timothy Ndambuki at the Machakos Technical Institute grounds, the VP said denying Mr Kenyatta and Mr Ruto the opportunity to contest the presidency had the danger of inviting tension in the country.
“I like calling for sobriety on weighty issues,” he said, adding: “During the referendum, I said that we should not ignore the views of the church but they labelled me a watermelon; now I am saying with the General Election around the corner we should accommodate all individuals seeking leadership position as away of healing the nation.”
Assistant minister Wavinya Ndeti who is seeking the Machakos Governorship led leaders in condemning tribal groupings.
