Give Kenyans their December election

OPINION polls released yesterday by Infotrak and Ipsos Synovate show that the overwhelming majority of Kenyans favour an election in December 2012. Three quarters of Kenyans do not want the election to be held on March 4, 2013 as announced recently by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
The hands of the IEBC are tied. The constitutional court declared that the election had to be held within 60 days of January 14, 2013, unless President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga prematurely dissolve the coalition to allow the elections to be held in December 2012.
The public believes that a December election will be more convenient because schools are closed. Bureaucrats also think December will allow them enough time to prepare the budget. On the other hand a March election gives more time to the IEBC and government to get ready.
Raila has been pushing for a December election, Kibaki has been insisting on March. But whatever happens from 2017 onwards all elections will have to be held in August. So this is is a storm in a teacup. Kibaki and Raila should look at these polls and take note. Kenyans want a December election. Why don't the two principals just give it to them?
