Fire gutted down a section of Kimathi House in Nairobi on Sunday evening.
The inferno is said to have started shortly before 7pm, but it took about 30 minutes before emergency services arrived at the scene.
Eye witnesses told the Nation that the inferno broke out on sixth floor.
“I saw smoke coming from that floor and when I looked closer I saw flames,” said a security guard.
The entire 6th floor had been razed and fire was spreading to the other floors by the time fire fighters from Nairobi City Council, G4S, KK security and National Youth Service arrived at the scene.
Kenya Power and Lighting Company officers also arrived to disconnect electricity which was still on even as the fire spread.
They could not immediately establish the cause. Cars parked outside the building were towed away to enable the fire fighters access the building.
However, the ill preparedness of the city fire-brigade was evident as their equipment lacked adequate pressure to reach the affected floors.
Part of the crowd that had gathered outside the building got agitated and began shouting at the City Council’s firemen.
Police had a difficult time evacuating the scene.
The ten-floor building is significant as it hosts key firms such as Kenya Commercial Bank, Metropolitan Teachers Sacco, Pergamon Group, chemists, Leaders Institute, a fashion store, several MPesa agent stores among others.
