Chaos rock Oburu’s inauguration

By GEORGE OLWENYA and NICHOLAS ANYUOR
The inauguration of Dr Oburu Odinga to contest as one of the senators in Siaya County was thwarted after the event turned chaotic.
The meeting that was held at the Finance Assistant Minister’s rural home in Bondo turned unruly after Siaya County ODM Vice-Chair Akelo Gwela, who was the master of ceremony, recognised a section of ODM officials from Rarieda Constituency.
This forced another group to stand up as the true ODM officials and to demand they be given opportunity to address the gathering.
Efforts by Mr Gwela to calm them down by urging them to be patient and wait for their time turned futile culminating into a 30-minute fight.
Chairs and tables were thrown at each other as the public scampered for safety. It forced Dr Oburu to take the microphone and try to appeal for calm in vain. "I am appealing to you not to embarrass me in my home. I called people to feast not to fight," Oburu said, but no one heeded.
Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo took the podium and started chanting ODM slogans, asking the rowdy party members to calm down.
"This is the county expected to produce the next President and we cannot afford to fight in this home," Gumbo said. It was after this that the fighting stopped and Gumbo passed the microphone to the Alego-Usonga MP Edwin Yinda to address the public.
