The Catholic Church will announce its stand on the election date later this month.
Nyeri Archbishop Peter Kairu said the church was preparing a pastoral letter on elections and would issue its stand after a meeting on April 17.
“We are preparing a pastoral letter and we will declare our stand after the meeting scheduled for the 17th of this month,” he said during Mass to celebrate Easter on Sunday.
He said it did not matter if elections were held in December or next March since the most important thing was unity and peace.
“There should not be disharmony over whether the elections will be in December or March next year. We should uphold our unity,” he said.
He urged Christians to shun tribalism, which creates disharmony in the community.
“Jesus came to join us together. There should not be Kikuyu, Kalenjin, Luo or Kamba. We are one people and we should not be divided by tribalism,” he stated.
He emphasised the importance of praying for the country and leaders especially at this time when elections are approaching.
“We should pray together and stay united. Pray for our country and the leaders to lead with a heart of one accord,” he said.
Christians prayed for the country and the leaders during the Mass.
Recently, the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa, Rev David Gathanju said the March date for the elections was convenient because it allows Parliament to pass key Bills to operationalise the Constitution.
He stated that he term of the current Parliament would have just ended and it would be appropriate for elections to be held in March.
He however pointed out that the church would support any election date if due process is followed in setting it.
