A Bill to regulate use of alternative medicine in health institutions will soon be tabled in Parliament.
The Bill is part of a comprehensive national health system to ensure safe use of traditional medicine.
“Alternative medicine in Kenya needs further development based on research and innovation in line with the global strategy and plan of action on public health and intellectual property adopted at the 61st World Health Assembly in 2008,” Medical Services minister Anyang’ Nyong’o said on Monday.
Prof Nyong’o was speaking in Nairobi after receiving a donation of herbal medicine worth Sh8 million for people living with Aids.
The medicine, known as Restore Plus Granules, is manufactured by a Chinese company, S and E Bio-technology Development Ltd.
Prof Nyong’o said the medicine had proved to be effective during trials conducted in conjunction with the Kenya Medical Research Institute.
“During the 22-month trials, the medicine showed beneficial effects such as a reduction in opportunistic infections,” he said.
Prof Nyong’o said the medicine would enable his ministry to enrol 1,500 people living with Aids for further trials.
