Schools will not close for April holidays

By ACHAW LAFAU
For the first time in Kenya’s history, schools will not close this month but will run till September and break for three months.
Schools will open in January next year to conform to the Ministry of Education resolutions at the just ended National Conference on Education in Nairobi.
The decision that will affect the education calendar of primary, secondary and tertiary institutions will also see a new curriculum based on the 2-6-6-3 system introduced.
Education officials, school heads and union officials hailed the new system, saying it will address challenges in the education sector.
"By not closing this Easter we will have embarked on implementing this ambitious project in earnest, and for the first time our children will stay at home for three good months from September, giving them time to play" said one of the officials who did not wish to be named as he is not authorised to speak to the Press on behalf of the Education ministry.
In an unprecedented change of heart, stakeholders who had earlier objected to the ministry’s taskforce report endorsed it without any alteration.
