Registrar says in spite of the April 30 deadline, only five of the 50 political groups have submitted their papers
Politicians are in a rush to beat the April 30 deadline to comply with the revised Political Parties Act.
On Monday, acting Registrar of Political Parties Lucy Ndung’u said only five political parties had complied with the Political Parties Act.
Ms Ndung’u said the deadline would not be extended and that parties registered on an interim basis that fail to meet the April 30 would be dissolved.
She said Narc Kenya, Patriotic Party of Kenya, National Vision Party, Labour Party of Kenya and GNU have applied for full registration.
The Act requires that a political party will only be registered if its membership reflects the regional and ethnic diversity of the country.
There are about 50 political parties in the country and each is required to present a list of 1,000 members from 25 counties, two copies of the party constitution, a list of executive committee officials and original certificate, among other documents to the Registrar of Political Parties.
Ms Ndung’u said her office was verifying the lists of members presented by the five parties before issuing those which comply with certificates.
She said a computer programme has been developed to identify people who register with more than one party.
The United Democratic Forum Party is scheduled to present its papers this morning, chief executive Petronila Were said.
The party is associated with youthful MPs Abdikadir Mohammed (Mandera Central), Jeremiah Kioni (Ndaragwa) and Kabando wa Kabando (Mukurwe-ini).
Also planning to register this week are Planning assistant minister Peter Kenneth’s Kenya National Congress and Internal Security minister George Saitoti’s Party of National Unity.
Prof Saitoti is set to run on a PNU ticket though party organising secretary Maina Kamanda said the minister would also take part in joint nominations in the G7 Alliance.
“We have put everything in place and we will be presenting our papers this week. We have all the voter registers ready from most of the counties and have also opened offices and signed lease agreements in 30 counties,” Mr Kamanda said on Monday.
