Orange Democratic Party of Kenya (ODM) has joined a list of political parties rushing to comply with the Political Parties Act by announcing member recruitment drive.
Briefing the press Tuesday at Orange House about the impending countrywide exercise, ODM Organizing Secretary Hassan Joho said that the party targets to recruit 10,000 members in each constituency.
Political parties have up to end of next month (April 30) to comply with stringent requirements for full registration in order to be able to participate in the forthcoming General Election.
The conditions for full registration include member's list containing names and National ID numbers of 1,000 people in at least 24 counties, members' register to reflect gender, regional, youth, minority and ethnic diversity, and lease agreements for offices in at least 24 counties.
Registrar of Political Parties Lucy Ndung'u last week warned political parties which will fail to comply with the law that they risked automatic deregistration once the deadline expires.
Ms Ndung'u advised political parties recruiting members to desist from targeting already registered individuals saying her office had acquired a computerized system to ensure that parties do not duplicate membership lists.
Five political parties have applied for full registration. They are Narc Kenya, Patriotic Party of Kenya, National Vision Party, Labour Party of Kenya and Grand National Party (GNU). ODM, KANU, Party of National Unity (PNU) among other parties with provisional registration certificates have not sought full registration.
